IVF is a treatment that uses hormones to help sperm and eggs fertilize. Before IVF begins, the ovaries are checked for problems such as a uterine lining that is too thick or a fallopian tube that is damaged or blocked. During IVF, you take injectable hormones to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs at the same time. You might also use a procedure called intracytoplasmic sperm injection to fertilize the eggs with sperm.
If your ovaries develop too many egg sacs, you might get a medical condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, which can cause complications such as swelling of the ovaries. You might also have a procedure to collect the eggs, which is called egg retrieval. This may be done with ultrasound images and a long needle that is guided into the egg sacs, called follicles, in your ovaries.
Then you and your partner might try to have a baby using the fertilized eggs through an insemination procedure called intrauterine insemination (IUI). You might use your own sperm or have your partner provide a sample of sperm that has been washed. The doctor might use a catheter to insert the washed sperm into your uterus right before the ovaries release an egg, a process called ovulation.
