Careers in Cyber Security

The protection of computers, electronic communication systems and wired and wireless networks and the information they contain. It includes the prevention of damage to, unauthorized use of, or exploitation of these systems and networks, as well as restoring them when necessary. Cyber security also encompasses the assurance of authentication, integrity, confidentiality and nonrepudiation.

Cyber attacks occur on a massive scale, impacting government, corporations and individuals worldwide. Each year, there are more than 2,000 breaches of private data. This has given rise to new fields of employment, from cyber security specialists who focus on protecting a business’s digital assets, to cyber crime detectives who track down the perpetrators.

Even if the system was designed to be secure, breaches can still occur. The personal information of 147 million people was stolen in the 2017 breach of credit reporting agency Equifax, for example. This is why cyber security isn’t just about technology, but also about policies, procedures and awareness.
