LEVEL 1-HIGH COLLECTIBLE
Rugs from the late 1800s that are considered level 1 are known for their lustrous, animated quality and are woven by weavers who were free from commercial influence, allowing them to fully express their creative visions. During this time, a number of weavers emerged in the cities of Kerman, Hamadan, Tabriz, and Khorassan who produced masterpieces with a wide array of designs.
During this era, weavers began using natural dyes instead of synthetic ones, which helped create vibrantly colored works. The dye recipes they used were a closely guarded tribal secret and comprised a variety of materials including berries, insects, minerals, and seeds. This resulted in carpets with a deep, iridescent glow that has become synonymous with the Persian rug category.
In addition to creating luminous works, weavers also developed a new technique called the ‘vase style’, which allowed them to weave complex designs that were never before possible. Examples include ogival lattice carpets and garden designs, both of which have become a hallmark of the Persian rug category.
LEVEL 2-HIGH COLLECTIBLE
Rugs that are woven during this period are characterized by their artistic virtuosity, fluid design and exotic use of nuanced color. While they don’t reach the level of dynamism and design flexibility of level 3 high-collectible rugs, their uniqueness, fine materials and rare colors make them a favorite with collectors.
Whether you’re looking for an opulent ogean-style rug from Kashan or an elegant asymmetrical Sarouk from Laver Kerman, this category of carpets represents the best of the Persian weaving tradition.
This elite class of antique Persian rugs is renowned for their dramatic, symmetrical designs that evoke the power and glory of royalty. These dazzlingly adorned pieces are often centered around the emperor or court, with a variety of royal motifs and elements to choose from. This category of rug is a true testament to the ingenuity and skill of the artisans who crafted them. Each piece is a treasured work of art that serves as a symbol of a distinct culture. vintage persian rugs
