EV Charging Modes

The transition to an EV can seem daunting for some, especially when it comes to figuring out the best ways to charge. Luckily, the Blink Charging Mobile App helps to make the process simple and understandable, making it easy for you to find compatible charging stations and estimate how long it will take to charge your EV. This article will also help you understand the different EV charging modes so you can choose the right one for your needs.

Mode 1 Charging
Mode 1 charging involves connecting an electric vehicle directly to a standard AC socket without any special safety systems, and it is usually only used for home charging of light-duty vehicles like e-bikes. Using this method is very slow, and it can take up to 40-60 hours to charge a vehicle battery completely. It is also prohibited in public areas in Italy and subject to various restrictions in Switzerland, Denmark, France and Norway due to safety concerns.

Mode 2 charging uses an onboard charger in the EV to change the AC power from the wall box into direct current (DC) that can be stored in the vehicle’s battery. This is the most popular EV charging technology at home and at public AC charging stations like the Blink HQ 200. It is slightly slower than Mode 4 DC fast charging, but it is less expensive to use and reduces the load on the electrical grid. It can be used in both single-phase and three-phase sockets.
